Group health plans for your team

Employer health coverage, from a two-person shop upward

A group health plan is coverage an employer buys for its staff. Everyone eligible is covered under one plan, the employer pays some share of the premium, and nobody has to qualify on their own health.

You do not need to be big

Most carriers will write a group at two enrolled employees. The idea that group coverage starts at fifty people is about the federal requirement to offer it, which is a different question from whether you are allowed to buy it.

What it costs an employer

You choose how much of the premium you pay. Carriers usually ask for at least half of the employee-only cost, and for most of the eligible staff to actually enrol, so the group is not made up only of the people who expect to claim.

The alternative is helping staff buy their own individual plans, sometimes with a reimbursement arrangement. Which one is cheaper depends on your payroll, your state, and the ages of your team. An agent who writes both will tell you which way the numbers fall rather than assuming.

Who needs it

  • Employers with two or more staff and no coverage in place
  • Businesses losing good people to larger employers with benefits
  • Owners currently on an individual plan paying full price
  • Anyone whose group renewal came back with a large increase
  • Companies that have grown past fifty employees and now must offer coverage

Questions worth asking

  • How much of the premium do I have to pay, and how much can I ask staff to cover?
  • How many of my employees need to enrol for the carrier to write us?
  • Would my team be better off on individual plans with a reimbursement instead?
  • What happens at renewal if one person on the plan has a very expensive year?
  • Does this change what I have to report or file at tax time?

We're building this bench now. No Village agent has listed group health plans yet, so there is nobody to show you on this page — rather than send you to someone who does not write it, we would sooner say so.
